Jesus: Prophecy Fulfilled

We often ponder the magnificence and the many attributes of our marvelous Savior. Have you ever stopped to think about the many prophecies that were fulfilled in Jesus? One that has always been fascinating to me is that Jesus would be anointed with the Spirit of God.

Let’s journey back together to the scene of time of Jesus’ birth. The Jews were expecting the Messiah – but how would they know when He arrived? They had been promised one who would deliver them from the economic and military oppression they lived under. By necessity there would have to be something about the Messiah that would authenticate Him to the world. What would be the unique characteristic that would cause the world to accept His birth? The answer to this question lies in the fact that the Spirit of God was upon Him to do the bidding of the Father.

The prophet Isaiah had this to say about the coming Messiah: “And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;” (Isaiah 11:2). This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus’ adult life: “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:.” (Matthew 3:16).

Isaiah also had this to say: “1Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.” 2He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.” (Isaiah 42:1-4). This prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 12:17-18: “17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 18Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.”

If you are reading this I want you to understand one thing. God did not promise that His Son would be sent to be esteemed with earthly honors. Rather, His kingdom would be, and is, spiritual. At His next coming all honor will be given to Him as He executes His righteous judgment upon this world. Will you take just a moment to consider where you will be when this happens? The anointing of the Spirit of God qualified Jesus to extend salvation to anyone who will come to Him. If you have not ever trusted Him I pray that you will view our presentation “How To Get To Heaven” under the Resources tab.
